How does Find a Grave define 'famous’?

Please do not confuse importance with fame. Every ancestor is important, and every veteran deserves to be remembered and honored. However, that does not mean that they are ‘famous.’ An individual is more likely to be designated as ‘famous’ if they were well known outside of their local community.

How do I submit a famous person to Find a Grave?

Search using Memorial Search and Famous Search to see if a memorial already exists on the site. If the memorial has not been added you can add a memorial, add the biography (your original work) and select ‘Yes’ under the ‘Is this a famous person?’ section. Please do all you can to provide accurate and verifiable disposition information and review our Famous Biography Standards. All memorials submitted as famous go through an approval process. After Find a Grave's review, you will receive notification regarding the famous memorial submission that may include further instruction.

How are famous memorials managed?

Famous memorials are a special collection - approved, curated and solely maintained by Find a Grave. Find a Grave does not transfer management of memorials in this special collection.

What is a fame rating?

At the bottom of every famous memorial there is a rating system. You can rank someone's fame by clicking on one of the 'star' options. A vote of one star indicates that the person was barely famous. A vote of five stars indicates the person achieved widespread fame. Please do not confuse fame with importance when voting.

How do I suggest edits on a famous memorial?

Go to the memorial and click on Suggest Edits. Submit updates by editing fields, including adjusting an existing biography or submitting an originally written biography (see our Famous Biography Standards). Find a Grave manages famous memorials as a special collection. You will receive notification about the Edit you submitted when it is processed.

If you need to contact us about a specific famous memorial, you can use our Contact Us form. However, if the update can be complete through Suggest Edits on the memorial, please add the information there.

Can I add photos to famous memorials?

Yes, we welcome the addition of photos to famous memorials. Famous memorials are a special collection where photographs are usually limited to 1-2 good biographical photos and 2-4 grave photos. Photos submitted to famous memorials go through an approval process, which generally takes less than a few days. Learn more at Famous Photos.

If another member is managing a memorial, can I suggest that it be added to the famous section?

One option is to contact the manager and ask if they would submit the memorial to the Famous section. If the memorial meets our definition of famous and includes an originally written biography that follows our famous biography standards, you may submit the memorial link or memorial ID# along with the suggested famous category through our Contact Us form. If the memorial doesn't include a biography that meets these standards, please submit one with the email.
