How can I request to manage a relative's memorial?
- Determine if you really need the memorial transferred to you for management. You can add photos and suggest corrections without managing a memorial. With millions of members, there will be many overlapping family trees and it would be impossible for all members to manage their entire tree.
- Memorials are transferred for relatives with these close relationships: child, spouse/partner, sibling, parent, grandchild, great-grandchild, grandparent, great-grandparent, niece/nephew, great-niece/nephew, aunt/uncle, great-aunt/uncle, or first cousin. This would include adoptive, step and in-law versions of these relationships.
- Always explain your relationship in the request! Keep in mind that the memorial manager may also be related to the memorial and may not make the transfer. You may also want to include your specific interest in the memorial.
To request to manage a memorial for a close relative who is recently deceased (has died in the past year), see this page.
To request a transfer we ask that you contact the manager of the memorial. Go to the memorial in question, click on 'Suggest Edits' and scroll down to the 'Contact Manager' button. Select it and type your message to the memorial manager. Be sure to include your relationship to the person and any other reason for the transfer request. Send yourself a copy of the request by checking the box. This message will be sent to the member, even if there is not an email address listed on their profile.
Need more help? If the memorial in question is a relative to you (within our transfer guidelines) and the memorial manager is not family, then they must transfer the memorial.
If you contact the manager and they refuse to transfer the memorial or do not respond within a reasonable amount of time, contact support@findagrave.com and we will work on it for you. Please forward your copy of the email message originally sent to the manager when emailing Find a Grave. When we receive that we will reach out to the active manager once more. We ask for their response within a week. We ask that management request emails be limited to one or two requests per email. If you have many memorials to request, please space these out sending a few emails per day.
Please show sensitivity to immediate and extended family members and their requests.
Memorials listed as famous are a special collection curated by Find a Grave and will not be transferred.
Can I request to manage a non-famous memorial managed by Find a Grave?
Yes. Select Suggest Edits and then click the 'request to manage' button on the left side of the Suggest Edits page. Agree to the terms for management of the memorial.
As a memorial manager you will be expected to:
- Ensure that information on the memorial is accurate.
- Be available for other members to contact you.
- Respond respectfully to ‘edit requests’ and other contacts regarding this memorial.
- Transfer the memorial to any relative if they request it.
The memorial is transferred to your account.
Please keep in mind that if you request to manage memorials you are not related to, you are expected to transfer them to any relative. When you have used this tool to request Find a Grave managed memorials, we'd also suggest transferring memorials to local volunteers when requested if you are not local to the area. If it is determined that you are not managing these transferred memorials effectively, it is possible that they will be transferred back to Find a Grave or to a member who is specifically researching in the cemetery and will manage the memorials effectively.
Is there a transfer limit for memorials managed by Find a Grave?
Yes, while a new member is learning to use the site there are limits on transfers. After a member has been on the site for a year, they can request to manage up to 250,000 memorials managed by Find a Grave. This limit helps spread management throughout the community and also allows members who are local to the area manage memorials in cemeteries near them. Note: this limit is to the number of times you can request to manage a Find a Grave managed memorial, not the number of these memorials you can manage at one time, so if you request to manage a memorial and then transfer it back to Find a Grave, it will still count toward your 250,000.
If you've reached the limit and the memorial you are requesting to manage is a relative, contact support with the memorial ID, your relationship, and your request to manage it for assistance.
