Reporting a Duplicate Cemetery

What should I look for when reporting a duplicate cemetery?

What should I look for when reporting a duplicate cemetery?

Please only send in a report if you have researched and are sure that the cemetery is a duplicate. These are some factors that can help when considering whether to report a cemetery as a duplicate. 

  • GPS of each cemetery
  • Address information of each cemetery
  • It is possible for cemeteries to be adjacent to each other and be independently owned or managed. Adjacency does not automatically mean they are the same cemetery.
  • Similarly named cemeteries are not always the same cemetery. For instance, small family cemeteries can use the same name.
  • Cemeteries owned by the same entity may not be the same cemetery. They may be miles apart.

    You may want to check Topographical maps, Satellite imagery, Streetview imagery, or look into property records for more verification on where a cemetery is located or cemetery ownership.

How do I have duplicate cemeteries corrected?

If you are sure that a cemetery is duplicated, select Suggest Edits from one of the cemetery pages. Then select the Report Duplicate button to report a duplicate cemetery. Add the other cemetery name or cemetery ID for the duplicate cemetery, confirm the cemeteries you are reporting and submit the report. We will review the report and you will receive email notification if it was approved or declined. If approved the cemetery records will be merged into one cemetery.

What are Approve/Decline notices?

After we review the reported duplicate cemetery, we will Approve or Decline the report and you will receive an email notification according to your account settings. 

Can I cancel my report of a duplicate cemetery?

No, once the cemetery is reported as a duplicate it cannot be cancelled. 

Can I report a cemetery as a duplicate if it has already been reported in the past? 

Yes, if you are sure the cemetery is a duplicate cemetery. Please add a note and include information about why the cemeteries are the same cemetery. 

Will memorials be merged at the same time the cemeteries are merged?

No, duplicate memorials are not processed during a duplicate cemetery merge. These should be submitted using the Report Duplicate option on memorials after the duplicate cemetery has been processed.

Should I report a duplicate cemetery if only some of the memorials need to be moved?

No, to update these memorials use the Suggest Edits option on the memorials and update the burial details. 

If a cemetery has been reported as a duplicate, can I send suggested edits for the cemetery page?

No, please use the Suggest Edits option for cemeteries after the duplicate cemetery report has been processed.
