What is Transcribe?

Transcribe is the process of transcribing the information found from the grave photo into the correct fields in order to create a memorial and attach the grave photo at the same time.

With the transcription tools you can conveniently upload multiple grave photos from a cemetery. You have the option to transcribe them yourself or immediately send them to the community queue for the community to help transcribe. 

When you choose to transcribe them yourself, you have 7 days to do so. After 7 days, the photos are available to the Find a Grave community to transcribe.  

Here is an example of transcribing a headstone that you uploaded. Click on the Transcribe icon in the upper right of the homepage. Grave photos you uploaded will show up under the My Photos tab. Grave photos that are available for the community to Transcribe will be under the Community Photos tab.

How do I upload photos to transcribe?

Photograph headstones with GPS enabled for your device. The GPS coordinates will automatically upload to the memorial when the grave photo is added.

From ‘Contribute’ select ‘Upload Photos.' Search for and find the cemetery. Select ‘Continue.' Choose to transcribe the photos yourself or choose to have the community help with transcription. Drag and drop or select the photos to upload.

A second option is to upload photos by starting from the specific cemetery page and selecting ‘Upload Headstone Photos.’ Once the upload is complete, you can transcribe them. They are available for seven days under Transcribe Photos in the upper right of our homepage.

How do I allow or prevent other members from transcribing photos I upload?

When you upload photos in bulk to Find a Grave for Transcription, if you choose to transcribe them yourself you have 7 days to transcribe those photos exclusively. After 7 days, anyone in the community may help you transcribe. However, you will manage any new memorials created from your photos. If you do not want help in transcribing your photos, you will need to upload them in batches small enough to complete within 7 days. Learn more from Transcribe Details.

Can I delete a photo after it's been uploaded?

Yes. Select Transcribe Photos. Select Delete in the upper left corner of the photo.
