What should I do about duplicate memorials?

If you find more than one memorial on the site for the same person, you can report the duplication to Find a Grave by following the instructions below. Report a duplicate only if you are sure the memorial is a duplicate. If you have a question about a memorial, contact the manager through ‘Contact manager.’

If the memorial might be a cenotaph, verify that and follow the instructions in Cenotaph and Monument Information.

There are famous memorials that memorialize the same person but are in different locations or burial types. Please do not report these as duplicate memorials. If you find duplicate famous memorials in the same location, use our Contact Us page (Account Question or Support Request/Famous question) and include the memorial IDs in the main text field for the form, along with any other relevant information.

How do I Report a Duplicate Memorial?

1          Go to one of the memorial pages and select Edit or Suggest Edit. Scroll down and select 'Report Duplicate.'

2       On the next page, add the other memorial ID and ‘Continue.’

3      Review the memorial that you are reporting, making sure you have input the correct memorial ID.

4       Review the pair of memorials and the direction of the merge, adjust if necessary. If the memorials are in different cemeteries, be sure to add a note that states you know that this is a duplicate memorial and any other information relevant to the merge of the memorials. If we need more information to make the merge, you’ll receive an email asking to submit the merge again with more information.

After suggesting the merge, you’ll receive notification that it was sent on the memorial page.

We'll review your suggestion and take the appropriate action. You’ll receive an email when the reported duplicate memorial has been processed. You can change these settings under Account/Notifications. 
 

What are Approve/Decline notices?

We might Approve, Approve with Changes, or Decline the reported duplicate memorial. A reason is sent when we Approve with Changes or Decline.

We may change the order of the merge if there are changes in the memorial’s edit history, i.e. the name was significantly changed or the memorial was moved into the cemetery where a correct memorial already existed.

Once the merge is complete, you may want to check the memorial and edit it or suggest edits for any necessary changes.
