Linking Family Members

You can link memorials for family members together on Find a Grave.

In the “Family Members” section of the Edit page of a memorial you manage (or the Suggest Edits page of one you don’t), you can add the Memorial ID numbers of parents and spouse(s) to link them. You’ll find the Memorial ID toward the top of the memorial, under the Burial details.

Once those links have been added, we’ll automatically add links to the parents’ pages and will add sibling links for all the children linked to the same parents. Family member links will show up below the biography as in this case from the memorial for James Lang Buie.

Relationship links are reciprocal, spouses need only to be added to one memorial page for the spouse to display on both spouses’ memorials and children are added to parents pages when the parents Memorial IDs are added the children’s pages.

How do I add a second set of parents or link to other memorials in a biography?

It is your choice which set of parent memorial numbers to place under Family Members. Click on Edit or Suggest Edits, and place that set of parent memorial IDs in the fields provided. Save Changes.

To add another set of parents or link to other memorials in a biography, click on Edit or Suggest Edits and scroll to the bio field. Edit the bio field and add the text that will display as the link in the biography. This will often be an individual's name, but can be other text. Highlight that text and select the link symbol in the editor. Add the URL for the memorial you are linking to in the field provided and save. Scroll down and Save Changes. For step-by-step instructions go to Create or Send a Hyperlink.

If you manage the memorial, the text that you highlighted will now display as a link to the Find a Grave memorial. If you suggested an edit, then the manager will review and process it.

How do I update Family Members on a memorial I do not manage?

If you don’t manage the child’s memorial, you can send the parents’ memorial ID numbers to the manager by selecting Suggest Edits from the memorial.

To make this request, navigate to each child's memorial and select Suggest Edits. Then enter the parents' memorial ID numbers into the appropriate fields and select Save Suggestions to submit the suggestion to the manager.

Troubleshooting

  • Check to be sure that both parents' memorial ID numbers are in the correct field and that each child of those parents has the same parent memorial ID numbers linked. Then the children will display as full siblings. They will display as half siblings if only one parent matches.
  • Add the correct year of marriage for each spouse to display them in the correct spouse order.
  • When both a cenotaph and the actual burial exist, only add relationship links to the actual burial memorial. When a memorial with the actual burial location doesn't exist and there are multiple cenotaph locations or cenotaph and monument locations, add relationship links to one of the memorials and then hyperlink to the other memorials through the biography. Learn more at Cenotaph and Monument Information.
