How do I add a memorial not buried in a cemetery and choose a burial type?
Several burial types are available in our dropdown for those not located in a cemetery. If there is a cenotaph for the person who is not buried in a cemetery, please see Cenotaph and Monument Information to learn more about adding the memorial.
1 Select Add a Memorial from our home page or the Memorials section. Check the box ‘Not buried in a cemetery?’
2 Choose a burial type from the dropdown menu and select Continue to add the memorial information.
Explanation of burial types
Buried or Lost at Sea: For individuals who are officially buried at sea or who were lost at sea. Add any other burial details in the optional box provided.
Cremated: For individuals whose remains were cremated but are not interred or inurned in a cemetery. Add any other burial details in the optional box provided.
Donated to Medical Science: For individuals whose remains were donated to medical science. Add any other burial details in the optional box provided.
Lost at War: For individuals whose remains were lost at war with no record of their interment or final disposition.
Animal / Pet: If the pet is not buried in a cemetery, use the Animal / Pet option.
Burial Details Unknown: Find a Grave's purpose is to catalog and make available final disposition information. If burial information is unknown for an individual, Find a Grave is probably not the right place for their information. In rare cases, creating a Find a Grave memorial for someone with no burial information may be warranted, but these should be uncommon. If it is too soon after someone's passing for burial information to be known, please wait to create the memorial.
We understand that not all final disposition information has been documented and that there are individuals whose location or disposition is lost to history. We expect members to do the best they can to find final disposition information and that if an unknown burial is added, that it is uncommon. If a duplicate is created with the correct location, the correctly located memorial will be preferred over the burial unknown memorial and they will be merged together.
Other:
Other burial types are for use when the remains are not buried in a cemetery and one of these options has been chosen instead.
- Aquamation (Water based process resulting in bones or ashes.)
- Terramation (Natural organic reduction in a controlled environment.)
- Green burial (The body is buried and returns to the earth in a natural environment.)
Use the additional details field to add specific information about the remains (e.g. scattered ashes, remains kept with family, etc.)
